Tips to Bring Colour into Your New Home

So you’ve moved in and are loving your new home. It’s just missing a little something that reflects you and will truly make it unique. The answer you are looking for is colour and including it in your home is easy if you follow the tips below.

It can be exciting and fun to add colour to your new house, but if you don't know where to begin, it can also be overwhelming. Fortunately, you can add colour to your home décor in a variety of inventive ways, such as by painting the walls or adding vibrant accent pieces and artwork. Read on for some tips and suggestions for adding colour to your new home.

1. Begin with a basic foundation

Unless your style is unapologetically eclectic (in which case - go for it!), it is likely that you will want to have a neutral foundation for your colour scheme before you begin to add colour to your home. This means using a neutral paint colour on your major surfaces such as walls, benches, doors and ceilings. With a white, grey or beige backdrop, you can add colourful accents without the room becoming too busy.

A neutral base gives every interior designer a great starting point for creating a vibrant and personalised space using colour.

2. Select a colour scheme

Once you have established a neutral foundation it is time to select your colours. A colour palette is a collection of hues that go well together and produce a pleasing and unified appearance. If this makes you break into a nervous sweat just thinking about it, download my free PDF here - it will help you understand colour harmony and make it so much easier. Think about the atmosphere you want to establish in each room when selecting a colour scheme. For instance, you might pick soft blues and greens to produce a calming atmosphere in your bedroom or sunny yellows for a living area. You can choose to use the same colour scheme throughout your house or you may like to vary your selection between rooms or zones of your home. Either option is fabulous - just go with what makes you happy! Check out my earlier post here for tips on choosing colours.

Your colour palette is a reflection of your personal style and limited only by your imagination.

3. Incorporate colour with accents

Accessories are one of the simplest methods to add colour to your home. Throw cushions, rugs, curtains, and artwork fall under this category. In a bathroom you could do this with accessories and towels. Similarly, in your kitchen you might choose coloured appliances and display items. To unify the space, choose accent pieces that match the colour scheme you've selected.

Bright and vibrant, these cushions would certainly add personality to your interior design asthetic.

4. Colour a feature wall

Consider painting a feature wall in your house if you want to add colour in a more dramatic way. A wall that is painted a different hue from the other walls in the space is called an accent wall. This is a fantastic method for adding a strong splash of colour without overpowering the area.

5. Display unique artwork

A great way to add colour to your house is with abstract art. Because abstract art is frequently vivid and outspoken, it looks great in a space with muted decor. Abstract art will provide a particularly appealing and unique focal point for your room. Better still - select artwork that you love and use that to inspire the accent colour scheme for your home. Original abstract paintings are an essential part of home decorating.

6. Incorporate plants

A natural method to give your house colour is with plants. They not only offer a splash of green, but they also clean the air. To incorporate plants into your chosen colour scheme, choose plants with multicoloured pots or add colourful planters.

House plants are a fabulous addition to your space and when they come in a bright, colourful planter they really add to your design and reflect your style.

7. Combine various designs

A great method to give a space visual interest is to combine and contrast patterns. To create a unified appearance when combining patterns, pick patterns that fall within your chosen colour scheme. For instance, you could combine two prints from the same colour family: a flower print and a geometric print.

8. Include bright furnishings

If you're feeling brave, think about adding vibrant furnishings to your house. This might be a brightly coloured accent chair, couch, or even coffee table. Just be sure to select furniture whose colour complements the colour scheme you've selected.

Add a pop of colour to your home with a vibrant piece of furniture such as a comfy arm chair.

9. Install eye-catching illumination

Lighting is yet another method to decorate your home with colour. To add a splash of colour to your area, install colourful light bulbs, lamp shades, or even a colourful chandelier. Warm hues like yellow and orange can create a cosy atmosphere, while cool hues like blue and green can have a calming effect.

Warm lighting makes a space feel cosy and inviting.

 10. Hang vibrant wallpaper

A room can really come alive with the colour and design added by wallpaper. Use a wallpaper that is vibrant and in your preferred colour scheme to fill an accent wall or even an entire room. You can even combine different wallpaper designs for a distinctive and eclectic look if you're feeling daring.

The feel to this room is very homely and inviting and achieved by following the tips above to create a harmonious colour scheme and include coloured accents to the neutral off white base.

By incorporating colour into your home using the ten tips listed here you will achieve a unified and very personal look which truly represents your style. The best part is, that it is relatively inexpensive (and fun) to mix it up and replace some items to create a whole new look. Original artwork and paintings are likely to be one of the more expensive items you use to decorate your home - but buying artwork you truly love is an investment that will bring you joy every time you look at it for many years to come.
