How to Hang Art in Your Home Like a Pro (Part 1)
The walls of your home are the largest piece of decorator ‘real estate’ available to you. You live within them and look at them every day – they are valuable and should reflect you and the things that bring you joy. This is a simple step by step approach to using this space to highlight your style and showcase the artworks you love.
Step 1: Prepare your walls
Choose a paint colour. This may vary from one room to another or be standard throughout your home. There are many, many colours available depending on your personal taste. A quick visit to your local hardware store can provide you with colour chips which you can bring home. Sample pots of paint tinted to your specifications are also available and allow you to test a colour on different walls and in different lights in your home.
Some tips to remember are that darker colours absorb light and can make a room feel cosy and snug while lighter colours reflect light and make rooms seem larger and brighter. Neutral colours are soothing and easier to match to soft furnishings, but bright colours can bring an energy and mood to a space whilst being more challenging to compliment with furniture and furnishings.
You might choose to use a neutral paint colour and make artworks the star on your walls, or you may prefer to use statement paint colours and select fewer art pieces or some with neutral tones to balance your space. If your style is vibrant and eclectic, you may choose to embrace colour and vibrancy in both your wall colour and the artworks on display. There are no wrong choices here – just personal preference.
Step 2: Choose your art
Above all else - select the art you love! After that, you should also consider the attributes of the space you are decorating including factors such as the lighting available and the size and shape of the wall. It is also important to contemplate the size of the furniture in the same area and the scale of artwork required. For example, are you looking to create a statement with your art as the hero (a large piece on a large wall) or are you looking for a less dominant artwork or pair of works which will enhance another aspect of the room? Are you wanting to create a gallery wall or hang a single artwork? Will a portrait or landscape orientation best fit within the wall space being designed? Do you need to consider framing or re-framing the art to give you the look you are after and truly make your heart sing?
