This particular painting references the expansion of farming in the Southwest of Western Australia and the immigration to the area of many families attracted by free land grants. “Over the Hills…” celebrates the hardships faced by the women and girls who arrived and the pivotal roles they played in establishing fledgling communities and thriving agricultural industries whilst labouring alongside the men to shape new lives, nurturing, and supporting growing families to leave legacies which persist for women in these regions today. My grandmother was one such immigrant.
